The cottage at Montrose of Ballarat enjoys a special place in Australian history. The first blue stone cottage to be built on the Ballarat gold fields, the house of Scottish gold miner John Alexander is the only one of its kind still in existence.

The residence – which has seen both glory days and tough times in the last 150 years – provides a unique base for you to explore the rich history of the region. Included in your three night stay is a Eureka Pass for two which entitles you to entry into Sovereign Hill, The Gold Museum, The Ballarat Fine Art Gallery and the Eureka Centre.

Room Features
The cottage bedroom has nothing but the finest fittings and the Queen-sized bed is decked in sumptuous linen that will ensure you sleep sweetly. The ensuite bathroom features a cast iron claw foot bath, marble vanity, heated towel rail to make this a place in which you can truly indulge yourself.
Cottage Features
The cottage features the modern conveniences you'd expect from a destination of the finest quality, including air conditioning, gas log open fire, widescreen TV, DVD/CD player, stereo, broadband Internet connection, espresso machine, fridge, dishwasher and laundry facilities. Games, music, books are all provided.

A sun-drenched courtyard with table and chairs is yours to while away the time. The calming sounds of lapping water from the feature in our garden make it a delightful place to be. The garden – fragrant with the aroma of the planted herbs – features an Ellison Orange apple tree which is believed to have been planted by the original owners and to be the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Nestled in the heart of historic Ballarat, luxurious Montrose of Ballarat is the ideal launching place for many forays into the city and surrounds.

Ballarat is rich with stories and myths that are central to Australia's identity, and these come to life at places such as the Eureka Centre and Sovereign Hill. In particular, make sure you take the time to experience the dramatic sound and light show at Sovereign Hill called "Blood on the Southern Cross" which tells the story of the Eureka rebellion.

But, Ballarat is not all about history. A beautiful regional town, it offers numerous restaurants and cafes for relaxed or formal dining, and leisurely trips into the surrounds will bring you to many fine wineries that dot the region.

Getting There
From the Melbourne CBD, simply travel down the Western Highway for just over an hour. Take the Ballarat exit, then a left into Stawell Street followed by a right into Eureka Street. Montrose of Ballarat is located on the corner of MacDonald and Eureka Streets.
